It highlights the experiences of Black and Indigenous peoples, and the film delves into the power of water as a guide through these challenging times. (11min)
“Wildwood” is set in a rural East Coast trailer park, where Link lives with his toxic father and younger half brother, Travis. When Link discovers his Mi'kmaw mother could still be alive, it lights a flame as the siblings embark on a quest for a better life. On the road, they meet Pasmay, a pow wow dancer drawn to Link. Grand River Film Fest Presents: Shiva Baby
Grand River Film Festival Presents:
Shiva Baby (2020)
Free Screening
A near college graduate, Danielle, gets paid by her sugar daddy and rushes to meet her neurotic parents at a family shiva. Upon arrival, she is accosted by various estranged relatives about her appearance and lack of post-grad plans, while her confident ex-girlfriend, Maya, is applauded by everyone for getting into law school. Danielle’s day takes an unexpected turn when her sugar daddy, Max, arrives at the shiva with his accomplished wife, Kim, and crying baby. As the day unfolds, Danielle struggles to keep up different versions of herself, fend off pressures from her family and confront her insecurities without completely losing it.
Since premiering at TIFF in 2020, multi-award winning and critically acclaimed Shiva Baby is considered by many to be the first entry in true Gen-Z cinema, with writer/director Emma Seligman and star Rachel Sennott heralded as voices of their generation. A “tightly choregraphed farce” that blends Jewish and Queer identity with feminism and the neuroticism of youth. This film is a celebration of not having your shit together.
